How the Safe-T-Sash® was invented.

"It was a dark and stormy night." Really! The following article written by Janis Cleugh and published in the Tri-City News, BC, tells how the "Safe-T-Sash™ was invented.

Laurie Paulsen had safety on her mind when she borrowed her friend's sewing machine and stitched up the Safe-T-Sash.

The Port Coquitlam woman was driving home from work one evening last January when Laurie narrowly missed a cyclist on the road.

“ I wondered if other people were having the same problem - seeing at night. There was nothing on that person's clothing or bike that reflected."

The near-mishap shook Laurie, so much so that for the next month-and-a-half she surfed the internet to research pedestrian safety.

The statistics blew her away. After dark, the chances of pedestrians being struck and killed increases by 100 per cent. Eight out of 10 drivers in pedestrian accidents did not see the person they hit.

"The numers were astounding," she said. "It's not just the accident  but the rehabilitation that goes into the recover. Accidents that could have been avoided if the person was visible."

With that in mind, Paulsen, a former Director of a Ontario hospital, created the first design of the Safe-T-Sash, a one-size-fits-all polyester device that can be used by pedestrians and cyclists.

Better yet, Paulsen said it also can be used by people of all ages. As well, it can be placed on the rear bumper in case a driver has a medical emergency or has to change a tire on the road.

With the help of her brother and sister, Tim and Pam, the trio formed a company, invested $6,000 and had Safe-T-Sash manufactured in Ontario. A patent is pending, and the invention is now being sold over the internet. Paulsen said she's pleased with the response so far to her invention.

A motorcyclist in the American state of New Hampshire has already given his seal of approval, and it was a hit for Christmas. The product is also now being carried in running and cycling shops in Toronto.

She hopes the Safe-T-Sash will become as familiar as the helmet.

"I hope safety instruction will continue to be taught  at an early age," Paulsen, 55, said. "If children see their siblings wear it – just like a helmet – then they will want to mimic them. We want to tell people to wear something – anything – even if it's not our product."

Pedestrians, children and employees - teaching that increased visibility reduces accidents. Safety is our goal.

"My friend and I take neighborhood walks at night. She has a Skinny and I have a Northern Light. We feel very safe. My husband and I also wear our Northern Lights when we ride our bikes, which we do daily. I wear mine day and night, and I've draped my pannier with a Skinny.

It seems to me that cars notice me more, which is great. This is a wonderful product, and more compact than a safety vest."

Having purchased several of your Safe-t-sashes for the adults and the children in the family I wanted to write and tell you how pleased we are with them.  Even though we are still careful when walking or riding at night, and keep a watchful eye on the traffic around us, it is a good feeling to know that they are now also watching us, for with the sashes, we can't be missed!! Thank you for your useful and affordable product.

I wear my Safe-T-Sash whether I'm jogging during daytime or nighttime. It significantly adds to my safety by increasing my visibility on the road.  Also, I can put in on over any jogging gear, instead of having to buy expensive reflective jogging wear.

The Safe-t-sash is by far the most practical reflective piece of apparel for the casual bike commuter.

I had been searching for this type of product for a long time. It's very compact, takes seconds to put on over my work clothes, and provides good visibility without looking like a Christmas tree.
